The formal statement is that the Centre exists to provide services for young people aged 11 to 25 years, with a focus predominantly on the age range of 13 to 19 years. The five principle themes driving current work aims are:
• Being healthy
• Staying safe
• Enjoying and achieving
• Making a positive contribution
• Achieving economic well-being
The aims of all youth provisions are to work with young people to:-
• Facilitate their personal, social and educational development
• Enable them to gain a place, a voice and genuine influence in their community and in the wider society
• Support the often turbulent, emotional and traumatic transition through adolescence, from dependence to independence
So what does all that mean in plain English? Well, we are here to offer young people somewhere to go, things to do and people to talk to who are approachable and (perhaps quite importantly for young people) NOT family! Our programmes in are driven by the young people - in essence they tell us what they want to do and we try to provide it!
The Centre is currently running a youth club is open 3 nights a week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 6.45-9.15pm. The Centre is also a registration and distribution point for the C Card Scheme and has a weekly Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme training meeting.
Centre staff work closely with Southwolds School on projects of personal development, social education and mentoring.
Having recently been completely re-decorated and re-furbished, the Centre is now a modern and attractive place for young people with up-to-date facilities offering a programme of varied and interactive opportunities as well as a comfortable place to meet friends, have fun and relax. There is computer/internet access and the the sports hall on evenings.
